Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai
Campmany - 25-Apr-24
If you're in South Mumbai, it's very easy to walk around the Oval Maidan and have a look at the sorrounding buildings. On the West side of the park, most of the buildings are Art Deco style, hotels and cinema. On the East side the buildings are Victorian Gothic style, the highlights are the high court and the university buildings. At nighttime the park is closed but you can still walk around the fence, the victorian buildings are dramatically lighted. There are some signs on the gates of the park, also on the ground, specifying the buildings included in the UNESCO nomination. Even there is a Unesco sign quite far, in the marine drive at Nariman Point, to indicate the direction to Oval Maidan

Most visitors likely visit the place after seeing the Taj Mahal. This might impact the overall impression after visiting such an incredible monument. Nevertheless, the Fort is quite impressive, this is a huge fortification with several gardens and palaces inside it. Some buildings have nice views of the Taj Mahal far away. I visited the fort at 9.30 in the morning on a Saturday, there were no queues and I enjoyed visiting most of the places empty of visitors. No "official" guides outside the gate to offer their services, so overall very enjoyble experience.

If you happen to find yourself stranded in Chennai and have a free day, Mahabalipuram is the place to be. The best way to reach this temple is by taxi. From the hotel desk, they can arrange a private driver for the entire day for 40 or 50 EUR. Mahabalipuram is divided into three major parts: the Shore Temple, the Cave Temples, and the Five Rathas. The same entrance ticket is valid for all three, and you can easily walk between them as they are in close proximity. The entire place can be explored in 2 or 3 hours. While I'm not sure how Mahabalipuram compares to other World Heritage Sites in India, I can say it's truly stunning. Some locals, who have free entrance to the complex, may try to sell you souvenirs with elaborate stories ("official" guides, photographers, sculptors...)
